ABOUT UAG Energy GmbH

WHY WE DEVELOP A
BIOMETHANE HUB
EASTERN EUROPE

We are a Leipzig-based holding company developing a consortium for Biomethane production and trading projects in Eastern Europe. Together with our partners, we are aiming to develop 1 bcm of biomethane production capacity in Eastern Europe, with the intention of supplying customers in EU countries and helping them to decarbonise and reduce their dependence on fossil gases. We believe in the region’s potential, given its vast, yet untouched feedstock basis. We have built a project pipeline of 500 GWh in both Ukraine and the Baltics will soon be accomplished by new projects in Romania and Poland – promising supply markets of our Eastern European biomethane hub.

UAG Energy GmbH has been founded by Ukrainian entrepreneurs and Birkap GmbH, a German project development and financial advisory company. Like the projects of our founders, which mostly relate to the green hydrogen value chain and zero-emission solutions for the industrial and transport sectors, UAG seeks to contribute to Europe’s zero-emission goals by 2050. At the same time, our projects are increasing the EU’s energy system’s stability and independence from unreliable energy suppliers.

BIOMETHANE – THE available GREEN GAS

What is biomethane and

why do we believe in this market?

Europe wants to break free from dependence on fossil fuels. Biomethane is natural gas, but from renewable rather than fossil sources. It is derived from biogas, which is produced through the slow fermentation of organic waste, such as liquid manure. Gas is captured and upgraded to biomethane, which can be liquefied or delivered through the existing pipeline network. This product has the same characteristics as natural („fossil“) gas, which it is intended to replace. With regulatory support and demand for “green” gases, biomethane can be sold at a premium when exported to the EU.

The EU is demanding an expansion of biomethane production to 370 TWh by 2030. To cover a tenth of Germany’s annual gas demand with biomethane alone, feed-in would need to increase eightfold to almost 80 TWh. We therefore rely on imports from Eastern Europe, where the raw materials are cheap and gas infrastructure is available. At the same time, we assist our partners in navigating the complex regulatory framework, identifying suitable off-takers and securing financing for biomethane producing plants.

WHY OUR BUSINESS MODEL WORKS

Hydrogen – THE ENERGY OF TOMORROW

What is hydrogen and why do
we believe in its potential?

Europe is clearly on the path to a low-carbon, climate-neutral energy system, a goal that is increasingly being adopted by Eastern and Southeastern European countries. All our projects are designed to be hydrogen-ready, which means that the potential integration of each biomethane sourcing project into future hydrogen and e-fuel value chains is assessed.

This includes evaluating local hydrogen production and developing concrete conversion pathways. Depending on the conditions at the site in question, this can entail capturing and utilising biogenic CO₂ from biogas upgrading, splitting biomethane to produce hydrogen and using liquid biogenic CO₂ as a feedstock for hydrogen-based applications.

Although the European hydrogen economy is still in its infancy, we are confident that it will grow rapidly over the next decade. Southeast Europe, with its competitive renewable gas potential, is well positioned to become an important sourcing and conversion region. Accordingly, we collaborate closely with our technology partners to develop commercially viable downstream conversion concepts for biomethane-based projects.

Additionally, we are developing concepts to produce biomethanol from biogas and biomethane to decarbonise maritime transport and other hard-to-abate sectors. Biomethanol is a scalable and transportable energy carrier, as well as being a vital link between renewable gas production and global fuel markets.

OUR APPROACH

HOW WE WORK

We are an aggregator of biomethane producing projects in Eastern Europe, with a strong focus on Ukraine – the EU’s most promising origination market for biogenic fuels. Despite Russia’s war against Ukraine, we work on the ground with local partners, acting as financing and commercial partners, translating regulations, and preparing projects for European buyer. We market both existing and future volumes, delivered via pipelines or as certificates under mass-balance schemes.

Above all, we co-invest in the construction of new biomethane production plants (Greenfield) and the expansion of existing biogas plants (Brownfield) in the region. Often, these plants lack the equipment to process the biomethane to the required quality standard. In coordination with the requirements of our end customers and with the support of our mainly German technology partners, we ensure that processing and feedstock composition comply with all regulations and standards.

Founded at the request of leading European gas traders and technology providers, we qualify farmers and feedstock suppliers in Eastern Europe as biomethane producers. This means also practically the navigation through complex regulatory frameworks.

We use our deep regional expertise in Eastern Europe to develop projects in challenging environments. We prepare complex markets like Ukraine for EU investment—where many sourcing partners and investors still stay on the sidelines.

Based in Leipzig, we strengthen Europe’s energy resilience by adding biomethane to its green energy mix. We build zero-emission value chains for renewable molecules from production to offtake contracts.

Together with local entrepreneurs in Ukraine, Romania, the Baltics, and new supply markets such as Poland, we create viable business cases. This delivers exports, jobs, growth, and long-term stability across the region.

OUR VALUES

WE CONTRIBUTE TO A ZERO-EMISSION

ENERGY SYSTEM IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Our vision

We trust in a powerful EU, of which Ukraine and Moldova will be a member and well-integrated trade partner. With its vast agricultural cropland, its modern circular economy approach, and an unequivocal commitment to a just transition towards a zero-emission economy. With our partners in Southeast Europe, we showcase the sector-coupling potential for biogases, hydrogen, and CCU in our projects.

Our MISSION

We enable Southeast European entrepreneurs and local communities to create added value to their business models by co-developing biomethane production facilities for exports. This will increase their revenues in difficult times, while Ukraine and other Southeast European countries as well as the EU itself will step-by-step get closer to their zero-emission goals by replacing fossil fuels with green gases.

Our VALUES

As European investors, rooted in a system of trust and lawfulness, we follow the highest ESG standards in line with our Code of Conduct. Furthermore, we transfer our standards in projects in third countries wherever we can. We believe that these standards are the basis for long-term success and sustainable commercial viability. In the countries we work, we support all means of anti-corruption policy.
